Superior Painting is a family-owned painting company in Tallahassee, Florida. We have been here since June 1998. Our shop sits at 2184 Lake Hall Rd., off Thomasville Road near Maclay Gardens, and our crews work all over town. Painting is the whole business: interior painting, exterior painting, commercial repaint, pressure washing, cabinets, and the minor wood-rot repair that has to happen before the paint goes on.

How it started

Gerard La Mothe Jr. started the company in June 1998 and brought his father in as a partner. Gerard is the president. He lives in Tallahassee. He still walks estimates.

"I started a painting company with a degree in psychology and a Toyota Celica."

Gerard finished at Florida State in 1998 and started the company that June. His father came up from New Port Richey to go in with him. Gerard is a graduate of Leadership Tallahassee.

Father and son

The truck says "Father-and-Son Owned," and that is still true. Gerard's father, Gerard Sr., is still in the business. Mornings, mostly. He checks on jobs and runs materials out to the crews. Nearly three decades in, it is still father and son.

The people who stay

Gerard talks about these people before he talks about himself.

Colleen has been with Superior for 25 years. Almost since the beginning. In Gerard's words: "She's a fantastic painter. She works great with the customers." Homeowners name her in their reviews again and again.

Marshall Parker is our estimator. He has been estimating for 12 years and was a painter before that. If you call for a quote, there is a good chance Marshall is the one who comes out to your house.

Salon was one of our painters and was promoted this year to exterior project manager. Salon runs the exterior jobs.

Our office manager picks up the phone, sets up estimate appointments, and sends out insurance certificates when you ask for one.

Behind them is a team of about 30, most of them painters, working in crews of two or three. Reviewers name our painters by first name. You can meet more of them on the Meet the Crew page.

How we work

A person comes out for the estimate, and it is free. Marshall or Gerard walks the job with you, looks at the wood, and writes it up.

On the job, two or three of us show up, put down canvas drop cloths, cover beds and furniture with plastic, and move the heavy stuff on sliders. We buy the paint. We use quality paint from the major brands.

We are putter-oners, not picker-outers. You choose the color. We make it look right on the wall.

There are a few things we won't do. We won't paint over rot. We won't paint wet wood. If it rains for three days, we reschedule and tell you why. We paint year-round in Tallahassee, and we plan around the weather.

We are insured, general liability and workers' compensation both, and we will send a certificate of insurance on request. We have been BBB A+ Accredited since 2000.
