porch and wood trim exterior painting

Monticello sits about 30 miles east of our shop, a 32-minute drive out I-10 or straight down US-90. That is about as far out as we would send a crew. We are a Tallahassee company first and we are not going to pretend Jefferson County is our backyard. It is close enough, though, that Marshall can drive out, walk a house with you, and be back at the office by lunch. If you are in Monticello, call and ask. We will tell you straight whether we can get a crew to you and when.

The town, as we see it from the road

Coming in on US-90 you are on Washington Street, and everything funnels to Courthouse Circle, where US-19 crosses as Jefferson Street and the Jefferson County Courthouse sits in the middle of the roundabout. Monticello is the county seat and the only city in the county, and downtown still looks the part. The historic district around Madison, Jefferson, Dogwood, and Washington Streets was built between 1828 and about 1900 and went on the National Register in 1977. Frame houses. Victorian, Greek Revival, and Italianate details. The Perkins Opera House, the old jail, the churches.

For a painter, that mostly means wood. Wood siding, wood porch floors and columns, wood windows with real sills. Some of it has been painted a dozen times over a century, and on a house like that the last few coats can be the only thing holding a fascia board together.

Exterior work on an old frame house

Paint fails on old wood in the same places every time. Fascia. Sills. The bottom course of siding. Porch rails where water sits. On exterior house painting, we start by finding those spots, not covering them. Loose paint gets scraped and feathered. Open joints get caulked. A soft fascia end or a rotten sill gets handled with minor wood rot and carpentry repair before a brush touches it. We will not paint over rot. Paint is not a repair.

Old siding carries decades of grime and mildew, so most exterior jobs start with pressure washing and time to dry out. We do not paint wet wood. When it rains for three days out here, and in summer it will, we push the job and call you before you wonder where we are. October and November are the driest exterior weeks in this part of Florida, and they book up in late summer. If the porch is peeling now, call now.

Newer places out on the county roads get the same crew and less scraping. The old ones just take more looking before we quote.

Interior painting, same as we do it in Tallahassee

Inside an older Monticello house you get plaster, tall baseboards, and wood window casings, and those take patience. A crew of two or three covers the floors in canvas, wraps the beds and furniture in plastic, and slides the heavy pieces so nothing scrapes. If you commute to Tallahassee and cannot be home, we can arrange a way in. Read the interior painting page for how a job runs day to day, and tell us before day one if you change a color.

What people say about the estimate

People mention the estimate in our reviews more than they mention the paint.

"Great experience. The timeliness and follow up with the estimate prepared by Marshall were great. The professionalism, timeliness and attention to detail by both Colleen and Donna were excellent. The entire Superior team was a joy to work with."

Bob C., Angi, April 2024

We are not going to claim a number of houses painted in Monticello. Look at our work and ask us for two or three past customers to call.

The honest part about distance

Thirty miles matters. A Monticello job gets one crew for the whole run. We do not squeeze it between two Killearn houses. We watch the weather harder, because a rain day out there costs a crew an hour of driving. And we are usually booked out, so we will tell you when we can start. We do not promise a Tuesday we cannot keep.

Tallahassee is where the crews live and where nearly all the work is. Start with our Tallahassee painters page for the neighborhood-by-neighborhood version.
